US Congressmen evaluate CDC’s impact in Gondar
On 28 March 2018 two delegates from the United States congress were presented the latest updates on the current CDC work at the University of Gondar. CDC, also known as the Center of Disease Control, is the leading national public health institute of the United States. The CDC is a United States federal agency under the Department of Health and Human Services, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.
Its main goal is to protect public health and safety through the control and prevention of disease, injury, and disability in the US and internationally.

In Ethiopia CDC’s main focus heavily relies on the influence, efforts and how the program is benefiting U.S citizens. The prevention of diseases in one country can be said to have a direct or indirect effect on other countries in the world. Hence controlling diseases in Ethiopia can help researchers and experts stop the spread of diseases globally.
Stephen Steigleder, a Clerk in the House Minority Staff Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies and Laura Friedel, a Republican Clerk from the same Subcommittee were invited to the University of Gondar to evaluate CDC work in Gondar.
After a brief courtesy discussion in the University of Gondar president’s office with the President’s delegate, Dr. Asrat Atsedeweyn, the guests were taken to the University of Gondar’s College of Medicine and Health Sciences for a brief presentation that highlighted the risk and burden of brucellosis on public health and the livestock industry, and advancements made in Ethiopia’s national plan for brucellosis detection and control.
The delegation also got the chance to learn about Ethiopia’s first national brucellosis zero-prevalence study, the interventions that could reduce illness in Ethiopia, and the expanded detection capacity for other critical pathogens.
