UoG holds a community forum concerning Quara to Maqdela’s eco-tourism and environmental protection
Organized by the University of Gondar and Nigat Integrated Development Organization, the Quara-Maqdela Community-Based Eco-Tourism and Environmental protection Project Consultation Forum was held on April 12, 2021 at the Maraki Campus’s Aluminum Hall. Various higher governmental officials and numerous University presidents, vice presidents and renowned artists attended the function.
In his opening remarks Dr. Asrat Atsedeweyn spoke in length about the University’s history when it comes to such topics. “First of all, welcome to the University of Gondar and the ancient and historic city of Gondar. Among the various community services provided by the University we could undoubtedly say that strengthening of tourism resources, development, supporting heritage sites, promoting our heritage, promoting historical tourism destinations, trying to recover looted artifacts and adding new tourist destinations are all apart of our never ending fight to preserve our history” expressed the President.
Girma Tayechew, a UoG lecturer in history and heritage management at the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, said the main purpose of the discussion was to promote a culture of entrepreneurship, preserve historical sites and make places from Quara to Magdala a tourist destination.
At the end of the event there was a general discussion that was held on the future of the Quara-Magdalena project, its implementation and continuity, as well as the formation of committees to better address the needs of this much important part of Ethiopian history.
