The University of Gondar (UoG) is one of the first-generation public universities in Ethiopia. Established as the Public Health College in 1954, the main duties of the University are teaching, conducting research to solve societal problems, providing community services, and implementing technology transfer projects with local and international funds. There are seven colleges, three institutes, one faculty, and one school in the University. The University of Gondar was ranked first among Ethiopian universities for the third time in a row based on its performance. Recently, the University has been categorized as one of the research Universities by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education (MOSHE).
The University of Gondar is one of the few universities in Ethiopia which has been investing a huge amount of money in Information Communication Technology (ICT) to modernize and facilitate the teaching-learning process and automate activities of the administration wing. Organized under the Vice President for Business and Development, the ICT directorate has been trying its best to serve the university community, both the academic and administration wing, by providing ICT-related support. However, there was no formal document that guides the higher officials of the university on ICT-related investments, management of ICT projects, and collaboration of the ICT Directorate with the academic unit, in particular with the College of Informatics, Institute of Technology and Health Informatics Department. This policy document is, therefore, prepared to set direction on ICT-related investments and provide a fertile ground for the collaboration of the ICT directorate with the academic units.
This policy document provides policy introduction, policy scope, policy purposes, and policy statements of a range of policy topics. It begins with the introduction, purpose and scope of this policy document. Then, it addresses the governance issues of UoG ICT policy. Next, it discusses several policy statements for various policy topics in detail. Finally, the document describes the Implementation, Monitoring, Evaluation, and Amendments of this policy document.
