As you may recall, the French Embassy in Addis Ababa dispatched personnel to UoG a few months ago to discuss mutually advantageous aspects in order to advance their collaboration. One of the most powerful was their intention to jointly create a French Language Center in Gondar’s flagship University.
The Embassy of France and the French Alliance invited officials from several higher education institutions, including UoG, to participate in an international workshop focusing on Ethio-Euro Cooperation as part of this historic partnership.
Those who attended the 2 day event included the Ambassador of France to Ethiopia Mr. Remi Marechaux, Mrs. Sophie Moal Head of Cooperation, Deputy Head of Campus France African Unit Mrs. Oumou Diakite, Academic Vice President of the University of Gondar Dr. Kassahun Tegegne, Dean of the College of Social Science and Humanities Dr. Agenehu Tesfa, and Presidents and delegates of various Ethiopian Higher institutions.
At the end of the event there was a signing ceremony where the University of Gondar signed a memorandum of Understanding with the Embassy of France.
The education cooperation actions carried out by the French Embassy in Ethiopia aim at developing the quality of French teaching in Ethiopia. In order to achieve this shared objective, a quality label entitled “teaching French in Ethiopia” has been designed by the French Embassy. Such a label will encourage higher education institutions to provide and to develop a French course program, while committing its quality assurance.
The University of Gondar will soon hire a French language coordinator and teacher for this fall semester. The individual will be incharge of developing the French Language at UoG and wil give opportunities to staff member, students and even tour guides in the city of Gondar to progress their interest in the French Language.
