Department of Department of History and Heritage Management Profile

Department of History and Heritage Management was established in 2010. The Department is dedicated to contribute to the sustainable socio-cultural and economic development of the nation through provision of societal needs-tailored education, undertake problem based researches on History, Culture and Heritage issues as well as rendering relevant community services. The department is also active in implementing technology transfer project in the community.

The program specifically aspires to produce graduates who can give professional services to posts be it governmental or non-governmental organizations, private companies and different institutions like Cultural office heads; they serve as advisors in tour organizations, Agencies, Teachers for high schools and preparatory schools and Instructors in higher institutions, graduates from the department also can work as experts at various Heritage management institutions; they also do researches in different academic and research institutions. As experts and managers in different organizations they work on culture and historical heritage resources (e.g. Authority for Research and Conservation, of cultural Heritage (ARCCH) Museums, Cultural and Tourism Bureaus and the Ministry, curator (museum specialist) in archival centers of various organizations.

The main study levels in the Department are Bachelors and Masters. Entry requirements: Under graduate applicants for degree studies are required to have completed their preparatory education and must possessed university eligibility. Master studies requirement is bachelor degree and all documentation must possess university eligibility. Duration/study type for regular students is 3 years, and it is 5 years for summer undergraduate students, but for master students it is 2 years for Regular students, and 3 years for extension and summer students.

The main study directions of the department are Ethiopian History, African History, World History, and Cultural Heritage Management, Archaeology, Museum studies and Archival Management. The instructional media of the Department is English. Currently, the numbers of students who are enrolled in the Department are Regular 108 (M=30, F=78), summer 164 (M=120, F=44), and post graduate Extension 12 (M=9, F=3) regular 38 (M=28, F=10), summer 23 (M=23, F=0) and the numbers of staff within the Department are Permanent (12) i.e one Associate professor, two Assistant professors, and nine lecturers, and we do have also two on study leave. We have one expatriate staff among the active 12.

Regarding staff development, the department has increasing number of staff profiles such as Associate professor, Assistant Professors, PhD candidates and Lecturers. Currently, the Department runs 2 MA programmes. We are working to open one (1) PhD program in history at the end of the five year plan.
