Brief History of the Department
The Department of Social Work is located in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities at University of Gondar. The departmentwas established in 2010 with the opening of Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program.The Department is the second public institution next to the School of Social Work at Addis Ababa University in commencing social work education in Ethiopia. In 2013, the Department has launched Master of Social Work (MSW) programin the regular, extension and summer programs. Currently, the Department is has developed curriculum to launch PhD program in Social Work by September 2017 in collaboration with national and international partner universities.
Our Department at a Glance
The department hosts both the BSW and MSW programs. Since its inception, the department graduates a total of 180 BSW students of which 75 of them are females while 105 of them are males. Currently, the department enrolled 363 students in the BSW programof which 160 are females while 203 of them are males and also 127 MSW students in the regular, extension and summer programs of which 28 of them are females while 99 of them are males.
The staff profiles of the department is well qualified in the social work training at different levels which can fulfil the quality of the education provided to the students of the department. The department has 1 associate professor (PhD), 2 assistant professors (PhD), 1 assistant professor (MSW), 10 senior lecturers and 1 assistant lecturerwho are on duty. While 1 assistant professor (MSW), 3 assistant lecturers and 3 graduate assistants are on study leave for pursuing their PhD and master’s degree respectively.The faculty members are actively involved in various research and community service projects.
Field education is the central component of the social work training at Department of Social Work, University of Gondar which enables students to integrate theory with practice.Field education is concurrent with course work and is required during both the junior and senior years. Faculty as well as fieldwork placement agency will jointly provide supportive supervisory inputs to train students and build their professional identity in an incremental manner from the first to the third year. For the BSW program, we have three field education courses each having 4 credit hours and a minimum of 200 field hours each with a total of 600 hours.The field education in the BSW curriculum program is designed to prepare beginning level generalist social work practitioners. In the MSW program, there are two field education courses each having 3 credit hours and a minimum of 450 field hours each with a total of 900 hours. The field education in the MSW curriculum program is designed to prepare advanced social work practitioners with two unit modules at every year of study level. The Department has partnership with regional, national and international universities and institutions such as School of Social Work, Addis Ababa University; Amhara Regional Women and Children Affairs; College of Social Work, Ohio State University; Graduate School of Social Work; Dominican University, School of Social Work, University of Montana, USA as well as Department of Social Work, Coburg University, Germany.
