Department (Program) Profile of the Department of English Language and Literature, University of Gondar
The Department of English Language and Literature was officially launched in 2004/1996 E.C./ with a few instructors as a BA Degree program with a duration of 3 years. The program offers a wide range of learning experiences to acquaint students with the breadth and diversity of English studies.
Currently, the department runs 3 MA Degree programs namely Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), Applied Linguistics and Communication (ALCM), and Literature in English. It also runs one PhD program in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) with 2 batches of candidates already making it the only department to launch and run a PhD program in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities. Besides, it is working to open PhD programs in Applied Linguistics and Communication and Literature in English very soon.
The total number of staffs of the department has now risen to 68, with 55 of them active including the 4 expatriates, and 4 supporting staff. The qualification of all the academic staff is Masters degree and above. Amongst the staff, 5 are PhD holders in TEFL, 3 in Literature in English, and 2 in Applied Linguistics and Communication. Among the 12 PhD holders, 10 are Ethiopians.
The department owns English Language Improvement Center (ELIC) which is committed to the improvement of all aspects of English language of the university’s community, and the German Language Unit which was launched for teaching German as a Foreign Language. Beneficiaries of this unit include the academic staff and students coming from all academic units of the university and out of the university.
The department is about to upgrade to Faculty level along with the Department of Ethiopian Languages and Literature.
Most of the academic staff have been engaged with mega research and community service. They are actively involved in student advising and other related activities. Currently, in our department more than 100 students in the regular and 1200 in the summer program have been enrolled. Besides, in the department, there are more than 50 regular MA students and 18 PhD candidates.
