An event concerning capacity building and an overview of accomplishments of the past year is taking place at UoG through April 17- 20, 2018. The workshop was organized by UoG’s Faculty of Education, Department of Special needs and Inclusive education. The project was established in 2017 and was funded by the Austria Partnership Program in Higher Education and Research for Development (APPEAR).
According to Yetnebersh Negussie, who will be with us to share some incredible insight, “People with disabilities have one handicap but also have 99 abilities”. Being famous for appearing on famous television talkshows Yetnebersh is a vocal advocate for people with disabilities.
The project tries to accomplish collaborative tools so that four Universities including University of Gondar, Addis Ababa University, Dila University and University of Vienna in Austria have closer ties in the field of disability. In the workshop delegates from the four Universities and as well as students with disabilities were present to participate in the discussions.
The main objectives of the workshop are to enhance the handling of disabled students, contribute materials, and encouraging capacity building training in theUniversity. In the coming two days presentations by artists and scholars, such as Laurette Professor Tirusew Tefera, and competitions will be held. In addition the visiting of historical sites will be among the activities.
Around 1 billion individuals in the world are said to be disabled. Therefore, such workshops as the one in UOG will do its fair share to change the norms that are associated with being handicapped.
