About the Department
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECEg) has been opened at Gondar University Institute of Technology since 2003 E.C and it is one of the largest departments in the University in serving the community and also improved the University’s reputation. The department has 55 active staffs (18 MSc, 25BSc and 12Technical assistants) and 41staffs who are engaged in Masters (40) and PHD (1) studies in local and foreign universities. The ECEg department aim to excel in teaching, research, industry linkage and in producing competent graduates to solve the problems of the community, as a result the staffs involve in these activities in addition to the teaching learning. The department has accepted and trained nine batches up to 2011 E.C (with a total number of 1,580 students) and already the first five batches are graduated and recruited in different organizations.
The department has seven categories of laboratories such as Fundamental and Electronics, digital, machine, computer, microcomputer and interfacing, communication and process control laboratories to facilitate the teaching learning process and to demonstrate the theoretical concepts practically. During the five years study program the students take different courses which are supported by laboratories and based on the requirements of modern industries the department has four specializations (streams) such as Communication Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Industrial Control and Instrumentation Engineering in the present undergraduate engineering course where the streams are selected at 4th year first semester. And to give the students a chance of applying their theoretical knowledge into practice and to improve the student’s ability to work in group, interpersonal communication and problem solving ability the department has an internship program, administered by the institute University Industry Linkage (UIL) office, which is conducted at 5th year first semester where the students are assigned at different industries of the country. The department has also planned to open Postgraduate programs by 2011 E.C in different specializations such as Instrumentation and Control, Communication Systems, Power Systems and Embedded Systems Engineering and at this time committee members organized by the Department Council are doing preliminary works.
