Admission and Graduation Requirements

PhD programs

Admission Requirements

To join a PhD program in Agricultural Biotechnology an applicant

  • must fulfill the general admission requirements of the university of Gondar;
  • have research based MSc Degree or equivalent in Biotechnology or related
  • disciplines, such as life sciences and Biomedical Science from accredited institution;
  • pass a written qualifying examination prepared by the department;
  • submit a synopsis for his/her PhD dissertation that would be rated “pass” by the screening team;
  • pass the face-to-face interview that would be conducted by the department

Graduation Requirements

During the first eighteen months, a student is expected to complete a minimum of 18 Credits courses that would put down a firm conceptual and theoretical foundation for the areas of Agricultural Biotechnology and 12 Credits thesis work or a total of 30 Credits. The students are required to take all Credits of compulsory courses, and a minimum of 4 Credits of each common and 8 Credit of elective courses.

The minimum total Credits for course work shall be 18 Credits for those who have MSc degree in Biotechnology. PhD students who have M.Sc. degree in other branches of biological science and/or who have MSc degrees from institutions other than may be required to take additional Courses based on the recommendation of the Graduate Advisory Committee (GAC) as approved by the Department Council. When deemed necessary, a PhD student may be required to take prerequisite graduate courses in biotechnology and other relevant disciplines. The grades obtained for these graduate courses will not be computed or Credited as part of the above indicated minimum total Credit hours of the program but graded as “pass” or “fail”. The performance of PhD students will be evaluated according to the letter grade system stipulated by the University Senate legislation. A student should complete each course with minimum grade of “B” and maintain a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 3.00 to  be in good standing. One “C” letter grade is consented with the aforementioned CGPA.

The PhD program shall require a minimum of three years and a maximum of five years to complete. A student in the sandwich scheme  is required to spend at least one and a half years at the Department. Eight Credit hours of the 18 required graduate courses may be completed by residence courses taken at an a credited university or Department other than UoG.

Msc Program

Admission Requirements

To be admitted in M.Sc. In Agricultural Biotechnology Program the applicant must have at least Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution of higher education in biological sciences with a cumulative GPA of 2.00 and above. Thus, applicants with Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Biotechnology, Biology, Chemistry, Plant Science, Horticulture, Agronomy, Natural Resource management, and Agroeconomics could apply for admission. Admission to this program will follow the general admission requirements of University of Gondar. This could include previous records, results on written entrance examination, and other criteria set by Un

Graduation Requirement 

To graduate with a Master’s of Science degree in Agricultural Biotechnology from Biotechnology institute, University of Gondar a student must take a total of 34 credit hours. Out of the total required 34 credit hour course work, 20 credit hours must be taken from core compulsory courses (14 credit hours course work and 6 credit hours thesis). The remaining 14 credit hours shall be taken from elective courses. In addition to course work, to qualify for an MSc degree in Agricultural Biotechnology a student shall carry out a two semester thesis research on an approved research topic related to the field under the supervision of an advisor and must write a thesis. The graduate student must satisfactorily defend the findings of the thesis before an examination committee. The examination committee shall be composed of two examiners and the advisor(s). The graduate student must also fulfil all the requirements set by University of Gondar regarding thesis research and defense. A CGPA of 3 and above is required to complete the MSc program in Agricultural Biotechnology. Moreover, students are not allowed to score more than a single C grade and no D grades are allowed to
