The information communication technology office of university of Gondar is acting aggressively in interlinking the three main campuses of the university and in network development. Presently, the university has signed a 10 million birr project agreement for network expansion with Pronet and Lasare International Service and Trading P.L.C in the three main campuses; Maraki, Tewodros and Technology.
The project is highly anticipated to bring a substantive change in the academic realm taking the teaching learning process to the next level. According to the ICT director, Ato Surafel Engedaw, the design is primarily made to benefit the major stake-holders of the academic community- students and instructors. Thus, when expansion is completed it gives a 24/7 service to the main libraries, departments and instructor’s office. It is also worth pointing that already there are some areas of the university already getting a 24/7 internet service in the university. To mention some, the president office, three computer laboratories in college of medical and Health sciences serving for students and instructors, and also 95% offices in medical and health sciences get internet service. As lack of internet service is equally the most lamentable issue by both students and instructors for quality education deterring updated knowledge; it is hoped that this hugely expensive project would help lubricate the transfer of knowledge and make the academic community be part of the emerging information society in all walks of life. |
