Brief History of the University

University of Gondar is a beacon that amounts to lubricating the path to democracy and development of the country. Half a century ago, the university, primarly, established as a Public Health College and Training center; now know as College of Medicine and Health Sciences. It is the oldest medical training institution in the country, located in the historical town of Gondar. Then joining the then Hailesselase I university, the college started its long journey of transformation. In 1978, a historical bilateral agreement was made between Karl Marx’s University in Germany and Addis Ababa University- succeeding in the establishment of Medical faculty in the in the Public Health College. In line with this, the enormous contribution of  the college on community service and the establishment of practical medical education and training crowned the university with the new iconic name- Gondar College of Medical Sciences.

In due course, attributing much to the German institutions and experts, the college claimed its autonomy (from AAU) in 1992.  Cruising on the right track for achieving its goals of pertaining quality education and resolving community problems, after almost a decade, different faculties started to proliferate. Hence, the emergence of Faculty of Management Science  and Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities and Faculty of Applied Natural Sciences ; enabled the college to grow  to University College in 2003. The next landmark, the transition of the University College to the University of Gondar, forged the university to widen its horizon and become a shining example in establishing centre of Excellencies pertaining to quality education, Research and Community services.

 

University Vision and Mission

Vision

UGR would be a leading centre of universal knowledge, taking into consideration the changing world environment, geared towards poverty reduction, welfare improvement and the development of science and technology in Ethiopia. The university will also 

be a centre of excellence in public health, biotechnology and tourism management.

 

Mission

Striving to bring sustainable socio-economic development by producing competent, compassionate and responsible professionals and citizens using curricula tailored to address the needs of society and with focus on community oriented practical education. Conducting basic and applied researches aiming at understanding and getting solutions to societal needs and problems. It disseminates its research findings and strives for the application of the outcomes of the research. Providing community services in order to assist the society in developing itself culturally, socially and economically.

 

University Academic Components

The University of Gondar consists of one college, College of Medicine and Health Sciences and six faculties; faculty of Business and Economics  and, faculty of Natural and Computational Sciences, faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, faculty of Veterinary Medicine, faculty of Engineering and School of Law, all offering regular degree program.

In addition, Extension and Summer degree programs are offered by most of the faculties and the college.
