Biosketch
Professor Baye Gelaw Tarekegn is Professor of Medical Microbiology. He received two diplomas from the then Gondar College of Medicine and Health Sciences (GCMS) and the Ethiopian National Research Institute (EHNRI) in 1982 and 1990, respectively. He got a BSc degree in medical laboratory technology from Jimma University in 1999 and an MSc degree in medical Microbiology from Addis Ababa University, Faculty of Medicine in 2003. He also got a PhD degree in medical microbiology from University of Leicester, UK in 2013.
Professor Baye joined the University of Gondar as a Laboratory technician initially and delivered diagnostic services in the then Gondar College of Medicine and Health Sciences for 6 years and began the academic service as technical assistant. He was employed as graduate assistant after he got a BSc degree and served as head for the department of Laboratory technology and the hospital laboratory. He joined the Addis Ababa University in 2001 and returned having completed his Masters and continued teaching courses such as Medical Bacteriology, Medical virology and Medical Mycology for medicine and other Health science students. In August 2008, Professor Baye Joined the University of Leicester for his PhD study and returned back in 2013. Upon his return from University of Leicester, he has been teaching Medical Microbiology courses for Medicine and other health science students at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences. Professor Baye Gelaw was also actively involved in teaching post graduate students.
He has been teaching advanced bacteriology and public health bacteriology courses for MSc students of the medical Microbiology track. He also served the department of medical Microbiology by advising Msc students. Currently, he is coordinating the PhD program launched in the department of Medical Microbiology and involved in supervision of PhD students. So far he was involved as main supervisor for 7 PhD students and another 3 students as co-supervisor.
Together with his teaching duties Professor Baye was involved in different committee works established at the CMHS in particular and the University of Gondar in general. To list some, he was member for a multidisciplinary research project and evaluation committee; board member Ethiopian Journal of Health and Biomedical Sciences; chairman for a committee organized to select MSc students; member of PhD curriculum developing committee; member for a
committee organized for the Diamond Jubilee of University of Gondar; chairman of Discipline committee for academic staffs of CMHS, UOG; Chairman for the credit association of staffs of University of Gondar 2009; chairman of a committee organized for Microbiological analysis of water at Megech ( ) water project, Gondar town; Editor and reviewer of Ethiopian Journal of Laboratory Medicine abstracts of the 2015 annual conference; Member of the Ethiopian Society for Microbiology; Editor in Chief of Ethiopian Journal of Laboratory Medicine (EJLM);
chairman for promotion committee CMHS, UOG. Professor Baye also participated in several national and international research conferences and also presented his research works at different national research conferences. He served different Universities as external examiner for medical students and also MSc students. He also delivered
a consultancy service for the World Health Organization (WHO) and conducted “a survey on the current testing strategies against transfusion transmissible infections (TTI’s) in the National Blood supply system of Ethiopia in 2007. Research Interest
Professor Baye Gelaw has a special interest in team based research in areas including infectious
disease research such as tuberculosis, Hepatitis, Cervical cancer, and other bacterial, viral and
fungal diseases. Research works on antimicrobial resistance focusing on superbug bacterial
pathogens are also particular interest.
